Hi Jill, and the wonderful Uprising Yoga family!
I was in your last round of trauma-informed training, and I wanted to let you know some great news....After months of maneuvering the hoops, I finally started my yoga group at the juvenile detention facility I work at here in Bakersfield!!! As far as I know, it's the first yoga class/group in a lockup facility here in Kern County! I have taught two classes so far, and I have them set up on a weekly basis. I have 9 young men in my class (it's an 8-week session) right now who have never practiced yoga. They show up every week eager and willing to learn, laugh, and try new things! I am grateful to you and the Uprising Yoga community for reminding me of the importance of this work, for giving me the courage and strength to continue to advocate for these valuable youth who need us, and for the constant reminder that I'm not in this alone!
"I felt so fired up after the training and never felt so passionate in Yoga and helping communities with Yoga. It is such a great feeling to be part of it. I found myself have been practicing Yoga more and knowing I can use this skill to help youth and community has been just a great gift!!! I am so grateful! Thank you" Rui Cang, Marriage & Family Therapist Intern
"The UpRising Yoga Workshop is not just for Yoga Instructors. In the public school system we are dealing with the same traumatized youth. As a math teacher I learned some great skills on how to build better relations with to my students. This UpRising Yoga Workshop coupled with Lowering the Affective Filter training are the best resources for anyone dealing with youth today. This is a great Professional Development Workshop for all educators!!" From Zaneta, LAUSD School Teacher
"UpRising Yoga had been on my radar for some time. I hold a deep respect for the work they do and they fit right in with the LoveMore Movement. It takes courage, resilience, and dedication to work with the prison population and I admire Jill Ippolito for creating such an organization that’s willing to lean into the shadow side of our society and viewing those imprisoned as human beings rather than numbers in a system. The training was deeply moving. Jill and her team provided a rich array of speakers; some from the outside whose work is dedicated to providing resources to those whom are underserved, and individuals who work on the inside of the juvenile detention system. This training is illuminating, heart opening, joyful and heartbreaking. This training is invaluable, and the tools I added to my toolkit are applicable in any work with youth, underserved or otherwise. I felt like I had found a community profoundly committed to service work. I felt at home." Sarit Z. Rogers, Founder, LoveMore Movement, Yoga Teacher, Photographer
"Please support this amazing organization. Until I found UpRising I new nothing about the horrors of sexual trafficking and the fact that thousands of children are being lured and forced into prostitution in LA county: Downtown LA, South LA, Compton, Hollywood - right here, at home. Girls anywhere from age 9 to 17 years old are recruited at schools, in the community (Starbucks), and offered a better life by their pimps. They are forced to "work" and meet daily 500$ quotas, they are beaten, locked in cages, and sometimes "sold" repeatedly for a pathetic 5-10$. These children are not receiving medical care and are malnourished often subsisting on one fast food meal a day. Commercial sexual trafficking is a 32 billion dollar industry in the USA. We need to spread awareness and help this unique population of children. UpRising Yoga goes into juvenile halls where these girls are placed and shares the gift of yoga. Healing and empowering these children to have the courage to leave "the life" and begin living." From Ana Santaolalla, LMFT
